International Tenants’ Day 2017: People, Pets, Places

Friday 22 September 2017, 08:00am
To Sunday 15 October 2017

Canberra renters have been invited to reflect on their personal histories of home. The emphasis is on place and time, how things in Canberra have changed, and how they stay the same.

The Tenants’ Union ACT is a community legal centre that supports ACT renters through a free legal advice service, community legal education, and advocacy work. Each year the TU celebrates International Tenants’ Day (ITD) with a series of arts events, the biggest of which is our annual Exhibition & Competition held at Belconnen Arts Centre. International Tenants’ Day is celebrated on the first Monday of October, to highlight the rights, needs and contributions of tenants around the world. 2017 marks the 10th birthday of the ITD Exhibition & Competition in the ACT. Since 2007 the exhibition has grown to become an important part of the annual community arts calendar in Canberra, both for participants and for members of the broader public.
Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, Photo Prize and People’s Choice. This exhibition will celebrate strength in community, the importance of home, the joy of companionship and the diversity of Canberra. Incorporating art and cultural activities into a celebration of International Tenants’ Day has proven a successful and popular way of engaging with people renting their homes, and provides a focus for the broader messages championed by both the Tenants’ Union ACT and International Tenants’ Day.
International Tenants’ Day 2017 Exhibition & Competition is supported by Belconnen Arts Centre and organised with the help of Street Law, ACT Shelter and with funding from Housing ACT. For more information about ITD events see our website:
