ACT Government Introduces Independent Jail Body

The ACT Government will establish a new independent agency to provide further oversight of ACT'S correctional services

The Inspector of Correctional Services would consult and report to the ACT government, as part of reforms hoping to improve the care, safety and health of detainees in correctional facilities.

The proposed new agency would give an inspector the power to make unannounced visits to correctional centres and court cells.

Reforms into the ACT's correctional facilities were established in response to the death of inmate Steven Freeman, who was found dead in his cell last year at the Alexander Maconochie Centre.
