Public Service Data Breach

Around 5000 federal public servants and more than 40000 private sector workers have had sensitive personal information leaked online in one of the nation's largest data breaches.

The Department of Finance, AEC and National Disability Insurance Agency have been caught up in the massive leak, which was caused by a private contractor.

The personal information exposed included names, passwords, phone numbers, credit card numbers and corporate information including salaries.

While the data was historical, and partially anonymised with most of the credit card information out of date, the Australian Cyber Security Centre was able to secure the information and remove the vulnerability within hours of being notified of the breach in early October.
