Replacement Switchboard A 'Coincidence', Days After Fire

ACT Health says a decision to replace a switchboard, days after a fire at Canberra Hospital was simply a coincidence.

The ageing switchboard - which had been flagged as an "extreme risk" months earlier - caught fire earlier this year causing 60 patients to be evacuated and multiple elective surgeries to be cancelled.

During annual reports hearings, Liberal MLA Elizabeth Kikkert asked executive director of Health Infrastructure Services Colm Mooney, why the contract for a new switchboard had been signed just days later.

Mr Mooney categorically confirmed the timing was a coincidence, saying at the time of the fire they were working through final negotiations with the tenderer.
