Light rail proposal to go before Federal Environment Minister

Both route options for stage two of light rail are still on the cards, after the ACT government referred them to the Federal Environment Minister.

Delays and cost blowouts have forced the government to reconsider their Civic to Woden via Barton route, with a second option to travel via State Circle being considered.

A final environmental impact statement will be assessed after the federal election, which will give recommendations to the minister, who then decides whether to approve the project.

The National Capital Authority must also approve the route, making sure it keeps in line with the initial plan for Canberra.
