Weight No More

If your New Years resolution was to lose weight and you haven't managed to achieve this, it's not too late.

For most, will power and motivation are the hardest traits to find to help you achieve your goals, but there's never been a better time to try again. Consider February 1st the start of 2012.

I don't know about you, but I normally spend January eating Christmas leftovers, attending BBQ's and opting for takeaway when it's too hot to cook at home. It's so hard to eat well during January.

But for many of us, it's not always about what we put into our mouths - it's more about the fact that we're not moving so that we burn off what we eat.

The other challenge for those wanting to drop a few kilos is that we set unrealistic goals. I'm about 10-15 kilos heavier than I should be and I've decided that I want to change that.

Instead of setting a goal to lose 15 kilos by a certain date, I've decided to take it one month at a time and it's working. At the beginning of January I set out to lose a kilo a week. It's the end of January and I've lost 5 kilos. How, I hear you ask? It's simple, I got off my backside. My diet hasn't changed much during January. I set two simple goals for myself.

1. No beer in January; (I use to have two or three on a weekend)

2. Walk for 1 hour a day (6 days a week)

The beer part was easy, it was the walking bit that I initially struggled with - but I just set a routine that as soon as I got home from work, I put the joggers on and pushed myself out the door and I didn't return home until 1 hour had passed.

So now that January is over I have to set a new goal. My goal for February is to have no fast food (I'm calling it Fast Food Free Feb). Plus, I'll stay off the beer now that I have achieved that - what's another month without the amber ale. If I get desparate, a "glass" of red is better for me anyway, so they say.

The other insentives include;

Canberra is great to walk around, there are weightloss shows of TV at the moment which should motivate you and the weather should be great between now and Easter.

So I say give it a go....what have you got to lose? - That's right.....just the weight!

I hope my success so far in 2012 has inspired you and feel free to join me for "Fast Food Free Feb" - most importantly, get the joggers on and start walking - you'll feel better in just a few days!

About Leighton

Home town:

Manly in Sydney (That’s my excuse for being a Manly Sea Eagles fan)

Passions Outside of Radio:

Cooking.
Most nights you can find me stirring, whisking, slicing or baking.

Wine.
I have a big cellar of vino. I have some great $20 bottles and even a few decent $3 bottles.

Driving.
Love packing the car up and hitting the road for a weekend away.

Things I can’t live without:

My family, my partner, my cat. I’d also have trouble saying “No” to red wine, cheese and chocolate.

What I like about Canberra:

More restaurants per capita than any other Australian city. Love all four distinct seasons, especially winter. It’s got everything except a beach, and even that’s not far away
